Shira

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

And the romance with rava continues... :)

This weekend, it is Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival of Lord Ganesha. It is a grand celeberation for all my friends in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

For those of you who are not from these regions, I would like to introduce you to 'Shira', a very simple sweet dish made of Rava (Semolina). For those who dont know, various forms of it are called 'kesari bhat' in Karnataka, 'Halwa' in north India and various other names else where. Let me focus on the simplest form - Shira.

You get different kinds of Rava in the grocery shops. Ask for "Bombay Rava". If there is a confusion, buy the one with medium sized grains.

Fry 1 cup of rava in a pan with 2 tbsp ghee till the color of the rava turns to golden brown. In the meanwhile, boil about 1 and a half cup of water and keep ready.

Now add the boiled water to rava and keep stirring until it cooks properly. Add 1 cup sugar to this and mix well. Keep heating till it becomes thick.

The simplest form of Shira is ready!!!!!!

To this, add dry fruits (primarily cashew) and elaichi powder to taste. Mix well.

If you want different flavors, you can add cut banana or pineapple to get the taste. Believe me, it's awesome.

Have a great weekend and Happy Ganesh Chaturthi. Keep yourself safe from crackers and swine flu !! :)

Protection against Swine Flu

Inhale the smell of Nilgiri (Eucalyptus) oil regularly. This will help in clearing the respiratory system.

Eat at least 2 tulsi leaves daily. Tulsi is a good source of oxygen.

Dissolve a crystal or two of pachkarpura (a type of camphor) in water and drink daily. This is another good source of oxygen.

Wash your hands cleanly with soap immediately after reaching home/office.

Practice "Pranayam" (respiratory exercise in yoga) daily to clear the respiratory system and get rid of any breathing ailments.

Keep a sanitizer handy and apply whenever possible.

Wear a surgical mask / handkerchief over the mouth and nose while going out.

Keep your house clean. Use liquid sanitizers like Dettol, Savlon etc. to wipe the floors regularly.

As far as possible, avoid going to crowded places and enclosures like sabzi mandi, city markets, malls, theaters etc.

Keep healthy eating habits according to the season so as to not get sore throat, cold and cough. You might be asked to go to a H1N1 influenza testing center where you are at a higher risk of catching the actual virus.
